NHK reported on remarks made to the press today by Komeito Chief Representative Yamaguchi in which he dismissed the idea of Japan “sharing” nuclear weapons with the United States. “The Kishida administration is determined to uphold the three nonnuclear principles and so are we,” he said. “Japan should take the lead in pursuing a world without nuclear weapons. If Japan were to make an announcement on ‘nuclear sharing,’ it would undermine the nuclear nonproliferation regime and hence make the nation less safe. Taking a step that runs counter to the promotion of nonproliferation would undermine the global credibility of Japan’s diplomacy.” The leader of the junior ruling partner reportedly took issue with LDP politicians, “especially influential ones and those who used to be responsible for setting the course for the nation,” openly calling for discussions on the subject “without making anything taboo.”
