PM Kishida makes forward-looking comment on restarting nuclear power plants

On a TV Tokyo program on April 26, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio made a forward-looking comment about restarting nuclear power plants. “I would like to see nuclear power plants being put back online as much as possible,” he said. “At the same time, we will strengthen the safety screening framework by streamlining and raising the efficiency of the Nuclear Regulation Authority’s process.”

“We must seriously consider nuclear power in light of the tight conditions in the electricity market and rising electricity and gas prices,” the prime minister pointed out. He clarified the remark by adding: “Our basic plan has not changed. We will move forward with restarting nuclear power plants while gaining the understanding of the people.”
