The Japanese government has submitted to U.S. authorities an opinion statement requesting the U.S. government to clarify the operational guidelines for the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, sources informed Kanagawa Shimbun on April 30. The law will come into force in the U.S. in June. The law is aimed at banning in principle the import of goods from China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), and it could be applied to Japanese companies if their U.S.-bound shipments contain products or raw materials made in XUAR. The Japanese government wants to prevent Japanese firms from becoming subject to export injunctions or other excessive regulations due to unclear operational of the legislation. (Abridged)
