Sankei front-paged a report claiming that it learned from an informed source on Wednesday that Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea will likely participate in President Biden’s Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) initiative. The paper added that Singapore and other ASEAN countries may join the framework as well.

In a related story, Mainichi wrote that although the United States is planning to invite Asian nations to join the framework when it holds a leaders’ meeting with ASEAN in Washington on May 12-13 and during President Biden’s trip to Japan and South Korea on May 20-24, Asian nations are skeptical of the merits of the new economic framework because it does not aim for tariff cuts. According to the paper, Trade Minister Hagiuda told reporters on Tuesday that it may be necessary for the United States to make efforts to deepen Asian countries’ understanding of the framework by explaining how it plans to establish rules under the initiative.
