U.S. expects some ASEAN members to participate in new economic initiative

NHK reported on a speech delivered by White House Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell during a Washington symposium that was held on Wednesday on the eve of the U.S.-ASEAN summit. On President Biden’s plan to launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework initiative in late May, the senior White House official said there is “substantial interest in participating in the IPEF across Southeast Asia” and that some ASEAN nations will join it. Speaking on the U.S.-ASEAN meeting, Campbell projected that the issue of Taiwan will be taken up, adding: “It is extremely important to underscore that what happened in Ukraine must not be allowed to happen in Asia.”
