Toshiba has announced it has started a new verification test in the United States of its next-generation cryptographic technology “quantum cryptography communication.”  A communication network with a total length of about 61 kilometers will be constructed between the University of Chicago and other research institutes in Illinois and used in verification test and research. This will lead to the use of quantum cryptography communication in society.

The verification test is being conducted with U.S. research institutes. The period of the test has not been disclosed. Universities affiliated with the research institutes will be asked to confirm the practicality and security of quantum cryptography communication. Quantum cryptography renders eavesdropping theoretically impossible and is expected to become more widespread in fields that require high confidentiality, such as security, finance, and medical care.

Toshiba is promoting the development of quantum cryptography communication in Japan and overseas. In the UK, it has started a verification test in collaboration with the British communication giant BT Group.
