About 200 startups are launched by universities per year, and the cumulative total number of such startups is over 3,300, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Keio University posted the most new startups in fiscal 2021, with university-affiliated venture capital companies supporting the startups. Gifu University launched the second most. Although the startups span a broad range of fields, few result in an initial public offering (IPO). A sustainable growth strategy will be key to encouraging universities to be more active in launching startups. (Abridged)
