At an LDP party reform meeting on May 18, Secretary-General Motegi Toshimitsu announced the intent to have women comprise about 30% of the party’s proportional representation bloc candidates in the Upper House election this summer. The LDP plans to field about 33 candidates in the proportional representation blocs.
If candidates for single-seat districts are included, the percentage of female candidates will likely be low.
The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), and the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) have set targets of 50%, 35%, and 50%, respectively, for their desired proportion of female candidates.
