Saturday’s Yomiuri and Asahi wrote that China’s Foreign Ministry and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) announced on Friday that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet will visit the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China on May 23-28. According to the OHCHR, Bachelet is planning to visit Kashgar and Urumqi and hold talks with Chinese officials there.

Sunday’s Mainichi ran a Kyodo report saying that State Department Spokesperson Price told reporters at a teleconference on Friday that the high commissioner’s continued silence in the face of indisputable evidence of atrocities in Xinjiang and other human rights violations and abuses throughout the PRC is deeply concerning. Price added that the PRC is unlikely to grant the necessary access required to conduct a complete assessment of the human rights environment in Xinjiang.
