PM Kishida to inform President Biden of intention to increase Japan’s defense spending

Sunday’s Yomiuri wrote that Prime Minister Kishida is planning to express to President Biden Japan’s intention to increase its defense spending. The paper speculated that despite the view within the ruling LDP that Japan should increase its defense budget from the current 1% of GDP to 2% or more, the prime minister probably will not mention the specific rate of increase. Instead, he is likely to only express his intention to fundamentally strengthen the nation’s defense capabilities, out of deference to the junior coalition partner, Komeito, which is cautious about substantially increasing defense spending.
