President Biden demonstrates U.S. presence in Indo-Pacific

Mainichi wrote that President Biden departed Tokyo on Tuesday after wrapping up his first tour of Asia since taking office. The paper wrote that the President demonstrated the U.S. presence in the region during the trip by reaffirming the strengthened alliances with Japan and South Korea and launching the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) to reinforce its foundation for strategic competition with China. The paper speculated, however, that the United States will also seek cooperation with China in addressing the global rise in prices and food shortage triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sankei wrote that President Biden made clear the United States’ readiness to play a leading role in the Indo-Pacific to maintain the region’s free and open order based on the rule of law with the Quad and IPEF as pillars.
