Broadcasters led with Russia’s intensifying attacks in two provinces in eastern Ukraine (NHK), an update on the Yamaguchi resident who was arrested for allegedly gambling away most of the 46.3 million yen ($359,000) in COVID-19 relief payments that was erroneously deposited into his account (NTV, TV Asahi), and the first small-scale test tour in Japan by a group of seven people from the United States as part of the GOJ’s planned gradual reopening to inbound tourists from June (Fuji TV). 

 

Top items in national papers included the Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday that the inability of Japanese citizens overseas to cast ballots to decide whether to dismiss appointed Supreme Court justices is unconstitutional (Asahi, Yomiuri, Mainichi) a GOJ plan to allow pharmacists to take on some of the duties of nurses (Nikkei), and a GOJ plan to promote R&D for national defense (Sankei).
