Former PM Abe comments on Japan’s defense budget, Taiwan

Mainichi and Nikkei wrote that on Thursday former Prime Minister Abe commented on Prime Minister Kishida’s pledge to President Biden at their summit meeting on Monday that Japan will substantially increase its defense spending. Abe reportedly said that a “substantial increase” in the defense budget would mean raising it to the upper 6 trillion-yen ($47 billion) to 7 trillion-yen ($55 billion) range for fiscal 2023. The government has allocated 5.368 trillion yen ($42 billion) for fiscal 2022. Abe also said at a meeting of his political group that he welcomed President Biden’s remark on Taiwan because although there has been no change in the United States’ policy of strategic ambiguity, the President expressed his resolve and sent a warning to China.
