On May 27, a Japan Uyghur Association top official and others asked the suprapartisan Japan-Uyghur Parliamentary League (chaired by former Minister in charge of the Abduction Issue Furuya Keiji) to have the Diet take action against China’s human rights violations of Uyghurs. Tens of thousands of internal documents were recently leaked regarding human rights violations being committed in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region by Chinese authorities, including a list of more than 20,000 Uyghurs who have been interned in camps. Japan Uyghur Association Vice-Chairman Afumetto Retepu met with LDP Lower House member Mitsubayashi Hiromi, who is director-general of the league. Retepu said, “There is no greater evidence. We would like to see you vigorously promote a Diet response to the Uyghur issue. With [the leakage of these documents], there will be a new wave of criticism by Western countries, and we do not want Japan to fall behind.”
