All national dailies gave front- or inside-page play to reports that they learned from a source on Monday that more than 20 kinds of amino acids were detected in sand samples collected by space probe Hayabusa 2 from the asteroid Ryugu in late 2020. Amino acids are substances that make proteins and are indispensable for life. This is reportedly the first time that amino acids have been found in samples brought from outside the Earth. The papers said the latest discovery may lead to deeper understanding of the origin of life.
