All networks reported that a 47-year-old Japanese man who was wanted by the Tokyo police on suspicion of swindling the Japanese government out of nearly one billion yen through the COVID-19 subsidy program together with three other members of his family was taken into custody in Indonesia, where he had fled from Japan in 2020. According to the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Taniguchi Mitsuhiro was arrested by local police in Lampung on Tuesday evening on charges of violating the immigration law. The two governments are expected to arrange the transfer of his custody. Noting that MOFA ordered Taniguchi last April to surrender his passport after the Tokyo Metropolitan Police issued an arrest warrant against him, the networks said Taniguchi was staying illegally in Indonesia.
