Japan decides not to send delegates to conference on treaty banning nuclear arms

Mainichi highlighted Prime Minister Kishida’s official announcement during a press conference on Wednesday evening that Japan will not take part as an observer in the first meeting of parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) to be held in Vienna later this month. “No nuclear powers have acceded to the convention,” said the prime minister. “Japan should promote nuclear arms control and nonproliferation realistically based on its relationship of trust with the United States, our only ally.”
