Hazardous substance detected in drainage adjacent to Misawa AB

NHK’s Aomori station reported on Thursday that following the leakage of 760 liters of water from pipes at a hangar at Misawa AB in January, the GOJ and the governments of Aomori Prefecture and Misawa City conducted water quality surveys at ten locations near the base on June 17. The Misawa City Government announced on Thursday that chemical compounds 2.4 times the standard set by the Environment Ministry were detected at one of the ten locations and that no chemicals above the permissible level were detected at the other nine locations. The network said that the pipes were used for draining extinguisher containing organic fluorine compounds and that the U.S. military detected chemical compounds as much as 42 times the ministry standard there.
