Japan’s spent nuclear fuel to be reprocessed in France

Asahi and Nikkei reported on Saturday that the Japan Atomic Energy Agency has sealed a contract with a French firm to transport to and reprocess in France spent nuclear fuel generated at the Fugen nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture. The French company will purchase for an undetermined price plutonium produced during reprocessing. The plutonium will be used by a third party purely for peaceful purposes. The Japanese side will shoulder 250-million-euro ($264 million) cost for shipment and reprocessing. High-level nuclear waste also to be generated during reprocessing will be shipped back to Japan.
