Mainichi and Yomiuri wrote that they learned from the Hiroshima city government that UN Secretary General Guterres is planning to attend the annual peace memorial ceremony on Aug 6. He will be the second secretary general to attend the ceremony after Ban Ki Moon became the first in 2010. Although he planned to attend the ceremony in 2020 and 2021, he could not do so due to the coronavirus pandemic and sent video messages to the event in both years. Yomiuri speculated that the secretary general’s attendance at the Hiroshima ceremony is intended to convey from the atomic-bombed city an appeal for nuclear disarmament. Guterres attended the peace memorial ceremony in Nagasaki in 2018.
