Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times reported that a parachute fell in a field in Ie, Okinawa, at around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. The papers speculated that the parachute fell from a U.S. military airplane that was conducting training around the U.S. military’s Iejima auxiliary airfield. Ryukyu Shimpo said that according to the Okinawa Defense Bureau, an anemometer was attached to the parachute, which fell outside the U.S. military facilities and districts. No injuries or damage has been reported. According to a source, U.S. military officials visited the site at around 6 p.m. on the same day and retrieved the parachute. Okinawa Times noted that the site was only 70 meters from a private house. The Ie village assembly is expected to lodge a protest over the incident via the Okinawa Defense Bureau in the near future.
