Saturday’s Yomiuri wrote that the Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that it appointed outgoing Vice Defense Minister Shimada Kazuhisa as an advisor to the defense minister. Shimada had been an assistant to former Prime Minister Abe for six and a half years and as vice defense minister advocated significantly raising Japan’s defense budget in line with Abe’s idea of increasing it to 2% of GDP. The paper speculated that although the ministry had hoped to retain Shimada as vice minister to use his expertise for updating the nation’s three key security documents by the end of this year, the Kantei rejected his retention. According to the paper, Defense Minister Kishi is planning to have Shimada involved in the updating of the security documents as his assistant. Asahi, Nikkei, and Sankei ran similar reports.
