Mainichi reported that a record 35 women won seats in the Upper House election on Sunday. The previous high of 28 was set in 2016 and matched in 2019. A total of 181 women ran in the race, accounting for 33% of all candidates. The paper noted that the percentage of women among those elected rose by 5.4 points from 2019 to 28.0%, adding, however, that this still fails to meet the government’s goal of 30%.
