All national dailies wrote that the LDP is making arrangements for a memorial speech for former Prime Minister Abe to be delivered at the Diet during an extraordinary session to be convened on Aug. 3. LDP Diet Affairs Committee Chairperson Takagi proposed to his CDPJ counterpart Mabuchi on Wednesday the idea of delivering the speech on Aug. 5. However, instead of saying whether he approved of the proposal, Mabuchi reportedly requested that the upcoming Diet session, originally planned for three days from Aug. 3 through 5, be held until the end of August to deliberate measures to address rising prices and surging COVID-19 cases as well as the cost and necessity of holding a state funeral for former Prime Minister Abe.

In response to some opposition parties’ disagreement with the government plan to hold a state funeral for Abe, Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno said at a news conference on Wednesday that the planned funeral “will not impose a particular political view on Japanese citizens.”
