Three cities in Niigata to ask Ambassador Emanuel to visit abduction sites

Mainichi reported that the cities of Kashiwazaki, Sado, and Obama in Niigata, where Japanese abductees live, held a meeting on Wednesday and decided to call on U.S. Ambassador to Japan Emanuel to visit the abduction sites in the three cities and also in Niigata City. The paper said this year marks the 20th anniversary of the return to Japan of five Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea and the issuance of the Pyongyang Joint Declaration. The daily noted that U.S. Embassy political officer Booyeon Lee visited Kashiwazaki, where Hasuike Kaoru and Yukiko were abducted, and Niigata, where Yokota Megumi was abducted, in January. Kashiwazaki Mayor Sakurai reportedly said: “More than 40 years have passed since the abductions. The three cities plan to take every possible measure to completely resolve the abduction issue with the help of the United States.”
