Mainichi and Yomiuri wrote that the Russian military announced on Tuesday that it will hold the Vostok-2022 military drills in the nation’s Far East region from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. This will be the first time since 2018 for the Russian military to conduct the annual exercises in this region. The papers speculated that since Kunashiri and Etorofu Islands of the Northern Territories will be included in the drills, the exercises may be aimed at applying pressure on Japan in response to its sanctions on Russia. Noting that the Chinese military participated in the drills last year that mobilized as many as 300,000 Russian troops, attention will be focused on whether China will send troops to the Russian drills following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
