Japan protests ROK survey in waters around Takeshima

NHK reported this afternoon that Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara disclosed to the press today that three South Korean survey vessels were spotted sailing in Japan’s territorial waters or EEZ near Takeshima on July 24 and beyond. Kihara reportedly said: “Based on historical facts and international law, Takeshima is clearly an inherent part of Japanese territory. We immediately called on the South Korean side through a diplomatic channel to provide an explanation of the presence of the survey vessels and lodged a strong protest explaining that survey activities within Japan’s territorial waters or EEZ are unacceptable.”
