LDP lawmaker says “Japan is like an older brother to South Korea”

Asahi took up remarks made during an LDP meeting on Thursday by former Vice Speaker of the House Eto Seishiro, who said: “South Korea is Japan’s brother. Frankly speaking, Japan is the older brother.” He reportedly went on to say: “We should build bilateral relations based on the belief that Japan will take care of and guide South Korea.” Asked by the press later whether relations between Tokyo and Seoul are egalitarian, the politician said: “South Korea used to be a colony of Japan. In this context, Japan is like an older brother to South Korea. I don’t think U.S.-Japan ties are equal. In the same way, I don’t think South Korean people see their relations with Japan as equal…. Japan should always take a leadership position when it comes to relations with South Korea.”
