PM Kishida calls for review of process of counting COVID-19 cases

Yomiuri reported that Prime Minister Kishida held a meeting with Health Minister Kato and other relevant cabinet ministers on Monday during which he instructed them to begin reviewing the process of counting the total number of COVID-19 cases. The premier also reportedly called for swift discussions on whether to maintain the current classification of COVID-19 as “class 2” under the Infectious Disease Law, which requires counting all cases and quarantining close contacts. The paper said Kishida called for discussions with experts on whether to downgrade the classification to “class 5,” which is the same as seasonal influenza.
