All national dailies reported on a speech delivered by South Korean President Yoon at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the Korean Peninsula’s liberation from Japan’s colonial rule on Monday, during which he expressed his eagerness to resolve the mounting historical issues with Japan. The South Korean leader also reportedly stressed that he will work closely with Japan to address the common threats that challenge the freedom of global citizens. Nikkei said although Yoon tried to differentiate himself from his predecessor by saying, “When Korea-Japan relations move toward a common future and when the missions of our times align based on our shared universal values, it will also help us solve historical problems,” he stopped short of presenting concrete measures for improving ties with Japan.
