TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to tour Middle Eastern countries including Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates later this month as soaring energy prices stoke inflation.

The visits would be scheduled around the Tokyo International Conference on African Development being held in Tunisia on Aug. 27-28, which Kishida is slated to attend. The prime minister will consider visiting Saudi Arabia as well.

The agenda will include discussions on reining in oil prices and stabilizing international markets after the disruption caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kishida will also seek to secure sourcing of liquefied natural gas as Qatar ramps up production.

This would mark the first trip to the Middle East by a Japanese leader since January 2020, when then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the region.
