Yomiuri reported on Saturday that it learned on Friday that Japan, the United States, Australia, and India are making arrangements to hold a foreign ministerial in late September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to be held in New York. The paper said this will be the fifth Quad foreign ministerial and that in order to keep China in check amid increasing tension over Taiwan, the ministers are expected to reaffirm that no unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force are acceptable. The foreign ministers are also reportedly expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific, support nations that are saddled with excessive external debt, and respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.

In a related story, NHK reported that Japan and India plan to hold a 2+2 foreign and defense ministerial meeting in Tokyo on Thursday, projecting that in the first meeting of its kind in three years, the participants are expected to reaffirm bilateral cooperation for achieving a free and open Indio-Pacific amid growing moves by China and Russia to deepen their security ties.
