Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. (JNFL), which is constructing a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture, will postpone the completion of the facility. The facility was scheduled for completion during the first half of fiscal 2022. JNFL will inform the prefecture and village by the end of the week. This is the 26th delay. The nuclear fuel cycle project, whose total cost is 14 trillion yen, has not yet been realized even after twenty-five years. Its future is uncertain.

At a July 2022 press conference, JNFL President Masuda Naohiro acknowledged that the project would not be completed by September 2022, saying that “details, including the length of delay, will be decided later.” Masuda said that the project “won’t take two or three years to complete, but it won’t be completed in a few months.” (Abridged)
