Operation of Genkai No. 4 reactor to be suspended until next spring

Kyushu Electric Power Co. announced on Sept. 8 that the No. 4 reactor at its Genkai Nuclear Power Plant (located in Saga Prefecture) will undergo a regular inspection from Sept. 12 through the end of March 2023. The firm cannot meet the Sept. 13 deadline for installing counterterrorism measures, and so the operation of the reactor will be suspended. Regular inspections usually take two to three months, but the firm will extend the period so that it can set up the facilities necessary to protect the reactor from terrorist attacks.

The firm says that the counterterrorism facilities will be completed on Feb. 23. (Abridged)
