The Saturday editions of all national dailies wrote that Toyota Motor Corp. said on Friday that it has decided to end auto production in Russia due to interruptions to supplies of key material and parts as Moscow’s war against Ukraine shows no signs of abating seven months on. However, the company will continue to provide maintenance services to existing customers of its Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles. Toyota, which halted operations at its plant in St. Petersburg in March due to supply chain disruptions, is the first major Japanese automaker to announce its exit from vehicle manufacturing in Russia. The papers speculated that other Japanese automakers will also have to decide whether to continue production in Russia. Sunday’s Yomiuri and Nikkei wrote that Mazda Motor has also decided to halt auto production in Russia.
